British Science and Engineering Week
Supported by the National Assembly for Wales and FACE
The Event provided practical ‘hands on’ examples
of activities in the ‘outdoor classroom’ relevant
to the National Curriculum for infant, primary and home educated
children from Newtown Powys. Hosted by Dr Michele Becker and
her husband on their farm near Llanidloes participants experienced
in rotation and according to the Key Stage e.g.Biology, Mathematics,
Geography and Chemistry. The skills of observation, recording,
data collection, measurement and analysis as well as the planning
of experiments (AT1) will be covered.
Each teacher will be provided with a folder of reference material to take
back to school covering the practicalities of farm visits (health and safety – including
the new HOOF folder produced by the HSE, risk assessments, pre-visit and
farmers’ perspective), national curriculum links for science at the
various Key Stages and resources.
There will be a display of resource materials available to schools provided
by the CAFE Project and examples of work sheets and instructions both for
activities on the farm and for use in the class room prior to a visit and
as follow up. Schools attending or expressing an interest will receive
follow-up contact to book farm visits in the Spring to facilitate early
experience of the benefits.
